Tree Planting and Care
Planting
● Container trees can be planted all year long.
Bag trees should be planted during late fall and winter months. Be sure to remove the "grow bag."
● Don't plant trees too deep. The soil from the top of the bag or container should be at ground level.
If planted too deep, the tree may suffocate from a lack of oxygen.
● Don't make the planting hole too small; it should be at least 2-3 inches deeper and wider than the ball.
● Fill the void around the sides and bottom of the planting hole with aged pinebark mulch or wood chips.
Care and Maintenance
● Water the tree twice a week, but don't over water. The secret to successful planting is using mulch and
watering regularly and deeply.
● Tie the tree off on four sides with stakes or T-posts, and arbor tie to prevent the wind from
breaking new young root growth. Keep ties taught for about a year.
● Fertilize the tree in March, July, and November, but use no nitrogen in November since only
root growth occurs in the winter.
